Anophthalmia

Many feel that social media is ruining our generation. But, I think it depends on how you make use of it. Instagram has helped me connect with people like me and help me learn about different rare disease, like this one.

Biology

Anophthalmia is a birth defect that results in the absence of one or both the eyes. It may be caused by genetic mutation, abnormal chromosomes or any other toxins. Researchers are quite unsure but, since Anophthalmia is a birth defect, it can be detected during pregnancy via an ultrasound.

Effects

• Blindness or limited vision

• lack of eye socket
