When I joined blogging and opened a separate Instagram account; The very first account which inspired me to open up about my struggles was Extrachromieveda. Veda is the little warrior with Down Syndrome and Kavita is her mother. Kavita talks about her struggles with society and all the shaming Veda goes through. While keeping everything so raw and real, at times, her parenting with Veda reminds me of my mom. Now what is Down Syndrome?

Biology

If you have been following my series, you know that the diseases up till now were caused by a mutation which decreases gene expression. DS is caused by an extra chromosome. A typical person has 46 chromosomes, but kids with DS have 47 chromosomes. This occurs due to a faulty cell division and this extra chromosome causes and over gene expression.

Affects

  • Low muscle tone

  • Eyes slanting upwards

  • Small stature

  • Risk of leukemia

  • Mildly to moderately affecting the intellect

Kids with DS reach their developmental milestones a little late.

A DIAGNOSIS DOESNT DEFINE A CHILD

THANK YOU

STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT DISEASE, NEXT MONTH
